Pear PC - Preparing the virtual hard disk

Preparing the Virtual Hard Disk

As with Windows, a newly installed disk, virtual or otherwise, needs formatting before you can use it. During this stage we are going to format the virtual hard disk, in order that we may install our OS of choice on it. The examples below assume you are using OS X of course.

All operations on this page are carried out INSIDE the PearPC window. As long as you remember and obey this rule you can be confident that you are only affecting your Virtual Hard Disk. To move your mouse back out of the PearPC window to work on your Windows desktop, press your keyboard's F12 key at any time.

Select "Open Disk Utility" from the installer menu at the top of the screen (note, NOT the top of the window, the top of the PearPC/Mac screen!).

  • Now wait while the disk tools attempt to figure out what we're up to – this may take a while.
  • When finally presented with a list of disks present in your system you should see at least one hard drive and one CD drive.
  • Select the hard drive. Then click "Partition" in the tabs near the top of the window.

  • Under "Volume scheme" select the amount of partitions you want. You probably want to leave this on "1".
  • Give your disk volume a name, and leave the other defaults alone if you don't know what they mean.
  • When you're sure you have the settings you want click "Partition".
    You'll
  • be asked if you're sure about doing this. Click the "Partition" button in the window that popped up to confirm that you are indeed sure.

  • When Disk Utility has finished it will return control to you. You can re-partition if you wish, or quit Disk Utility, from the menu. To continue with this install you need to choose the last option.
  • You'll   now be returned to the installer and be told that it can now see your virtual hard disk, but cannot install anything to it and that its not bootable.

  • Quit the installer, which should shut the Pear PC down. Then re-start and follow the path through to where you were.
  • Your disk should now be seen as usable.

  • Click "Continue" in the bottom corner of the window.
